New Mexico News
June Potluck - The date will be announced in the May Newsletter. We would like to thank the Moulton’s for offering to host it. We need Pres., VP positions to be filled for sure. The Presidents job is not too involved. We have 2 major meetings a year (June appointee potluck & the tailgate party) and the newsletter is done 4 times a year. VP is just a back up for the most part although the VP could be coordinating special meetings, special events, etc. If you are willing to hold an office please let Bob & I know as the next newsletter will include the nominations and ballot. Voting will take place at the June meeting.
Senior Parents - Please send photos and information on what your cadet will be doing after graduation! We would like to include this information in our May newsletter. The photos will be returned if requested.
Sophomore Parents - Please let us know your cadets new squadron as soon as they receive it.
All Cadets Parents - we will be updating what your cadet will be doing this summer. I will send personal messages to all cadets but if you would like to tell us also, that would be great as we don’t always hear from all cadets. Our email address is rhardy@thuntek.net
Appointees - We would like to congratulate Andrew Lueckenhoff, Jay Talbert and Brian Willis on their accepting appointments to USAFA. We would also like to congratulate Krista Childress for accepting a prep school appointment.
Field Trip - Our Club LO is willing to set up a “field trip” for the parents to visit the F-16 Reserve squadron and/or Special Ops unit. We need to know if anyone is interested in doing this on a Friday before we can start making arrangements. Also if it would be better during the school year or the summer. If interested please call Bob & I.
Academy News
Graduation Information - You should be able to access the graduation schedule on the USAFA page soon, probably on the parents club page http://www.usafa.af.mil/xp/grad99/events.htm. Brochures should have been sent out to all senior parents mid March.
Firstie Parents Ice Cream Social - The Ice Cream Social will be hosted by General and Mrs. Oelstrom, at The Carlton House on Sunday, 30 May. The Firstie cadets will be contacted - but they don’t always remember to tell their parents!
Class of 2000 Selects First Academy Class Exemplar - A new program has been implemented, starting with the Class of 2000. Each class will select a leader of the past to represent them and serve as a foundation for tomorrow’s heroes. Each year the new class will identify their exemplar at Recognition. They will give a brief introduction of the exemplar and what that person means to the class. They will then dedicate an enclosed case with memorabilia that represents the significance the exemplar has to the class. The Class of 2000 selected General Jimmy Doolittle and unveiled the Doolittle Exemplar display at their dinner and fashion show. The display will be temporarily housed in the library until a site is chosen for the Hall of Exemplars.
Summer Session - Your cadet should have received their summer schedule by now. They are not set in stone at this point so be forewarned that some things may still change.
Cadet Pay - Beginning 1 January, the cadets received a $42.00 a month pay increase. They will not see much of the latest pay increase but will likely start seeing their raise next summer when the 1999-2000 school year begins. Even then, the academy has plans for some of the extra pay. Cadet will likely have to buy another uniform or athletic fees could climb. Excerpts from the Gazette 1/5/99. News Releases - The USAFA public affairs has now set up a web page for their news releases at: http://www.usafa.af.mil/pa/media/releases . Please bear in mind that often times, releases will be limited in content.
Cadet Treats - Bill Marks has a new web page: http://www.usafa.af.mil/svk/cadets/treats.htm . He has lots of goodies - check it out!
Appointee News
New Parents - First Night Housing for Unaccompanied 2003 Appointees - The AOG in cooperation with he Rampart Chapter of the AOG, is offering Bed & Breakfast to appointees who are traveling alone to Colorado Springs to start their Doolie year. Last year the AOG members housed 220 appointees.
If you can accompany your appointee to the Academy, we cordially invite you to do so. In-processing begins at Doolittle Hal, the alumni house, between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on July 1, 1999. The AOG will provide light snacks and beverages throughout the day and a complimentary lunch, beginning at noon, for parents and family members. AOG and senior Academy staff and chaplains will be on hand to answer questions along with Athletic Association representatives, Colorado Parents’ Club members, and other Academy graduates. After watching your appointee board the bus for the Cadet Area, please stay as long as you like and begin looking forward to Parents' Weekend in September, and experience you won’t want to miss.
If you cannot accompany your appointee, travel will be arranged by the Academy. Many appointees will arrive in Colorado Springs on in-processing day and, therefore, will require no first night lodging. Airline schedules will require other appointees to arrive the day before in-processing. Although Colorado Springs offers an abundance of hotel and motels, you may have difficulty finding a room during tourist season or you may prefer to have your appointee spend this first night with someone who’s “been there, done that, and got the USAFA t-shirt.” In either case, the AOG is here to help.
Volunteer graduate families will pick up the appointee on Wednesday, June 30, provide a place to stay (with dinner and breakfast), and transportation to Doolittle Hall on Thursday, July 1. That’s it. It’s easy to sing up. First, arrange for airline transportation. For a variety of reasons, the AOG cannot accept reservations until the airline ticket (paper or e-ticket) is in hand. Then call (no mail, fax, or email) the AOG, (719)472-0300, between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Mountain Time. Be prepared to provide the parents’ name, the appointee’s name and gender, the telephone number where the appointee can be reached, and the airline, flight number, and arrival time. The AOG will match you with a host family on-the-spot. From there, you and the host family will make direct contact to make final arrangements. Host families may choose to pick the appointee up at the airport or to have the appointee take Academy provided transportation to Doolittle Hall and pick them up there. This decision will be made between the appointee and the host family directly based on arrival time, location of the family, and work schedules.
The AOG cannot accommodate special requests from host families for appointees from certain states, etc. but does honor requests for a particular gender. This program is entirely separate from the official Academy Sponsorship Program. Although many families have gone on to sponsor their appointees, there is no continuing sponsorship obligation on the part of either the appointee or the family.
Congratulations to the NM cadets that have been placed on the 1998 Fall Semester Lists:
