USAFA Schedule of Events
for the 2000/2001 School Year |
Report date for new appointees to the US Air Force Academy is Thursday 29 June. The Cadet Swearing-In Ceremony is held the following morning on the Terrazzo. View this ceremony from the Chapel wall, and arrive early. With a good set of binoculars and some persistence you might see your cadets. This marks the beginning of the first half of Basic Cadet Training, commonly known as the first Beast.
Sunday, July 16th (??) is the end of the first Beast and is Doolie Day Out. Each of the Doolies gets to spend several hours with a host family for a home cooked meal and to make phone calls.
The second half of Basic Cadet Training (second
Beast) begins July 17th. The cadets march to Jacks Valley for about 2
weeks. While at Jacks Valley, the cadets complete marksmanship training, obstacle
and confidence course training, and may even get to eat an MRE or two (Meal,
Ready to Eat).
The entire Wing participates in the Acceptance Parade to officially accept the new cadets into the Cadet Wing. It is an impressive sight, with over 4000 cadets in formation on the field at one time. This event is held on the Parade Field east of Fairchild Hall. There is visitor parking near the bleachers. After the conclusion of the parade, each cadet receives his/her shoulder boards at various locations on the terrazzo. View this from the Chapel wall. While some free time is generally allowed following this event, you may or may not be able to visit with your cadet (although we found that the library can be a good meeting place.)
Since there are generally more than 6000 parents and guests visiting, make your lodging arrangements early!! Following the parade on Friday, parents can meet their cadets in their squadron. Once freed to depart the Academy, the cadets must return and sign back in by 1:30 am.
NEW MEXICO TAILGATE PARTY - Our tent will be open for pre-game around 10 am (??) on Saturday. Look for our NM State Flag. This can be a good place to meet your cadet unless his or her squadron is marching onto the field. Following the football game, most cadets are usually allowed a weekend privelege. Everyone from the New Mexico Association should stop by after the game for the party. We'll have burgers and hot dogs, but please bring your own drinks.
Thanksgiving BreakYour cadets are generally free to travel home during this time for Thanksgiving. Cadets should be free to leave after their LMD (last military duty) Tuesday, and are due back by 1900 hrs (7:00 pm) Sunday.
Christmas BreakCadets should be released on Saturday, and are expected back by 1900 hrs (7:00 pm) Tuesday, 5 January 1999...Tentative
Spring Break - 2000Cadets can depart after LMD on 24 March and return by 1900 (7:00 pm) 2 April, 2000.
